Welcome to Cedar

Punctuality and attendance

The school is open from 8.50am and registration starts at 8.55am; punctuality is very important because there will be early morning sessions which start promptly at 9am. If your child is unable to attend school due to illness then please contact the office (01772 797397) giving the reason for absence.

Children will have four members of staff in the morning as all children in Year 5 and 6 will be working together for Maths and English. Some children will also be getting extra support in the afternoons with Miss Green. Cedar class is very lucky as the children will be having Mrs Jones for saxophone and swimming lessons every Friday afternoon.

School Uniform

Please ensure that every piece of your child’s school uniform (including PE kit and coat) has their name clearly marked on the label. If you don’t have a permanent marker I have one available for you to borrow.

Homework, Spellings and Times Tables

Homwork will be set every Friday and will support the Numeracy, Literacy and Topic learning objectives taught that week. Each child will be given a Learning Log and all home learning should be completed in this and handed in by the following Thursday for marking. Your child will progress further if you do the home learning together and try to make the learning fun.

It would be useful for your child to have the following resources at home:

Pencils (for writing and colouring)

Each week your child will have a list of spellings to learn; which will be tested on a Friday.

This is the year that your child really needs to do extra work beyond the curriculum and to ensure they know all their times tables and grammar. There are various websites to help you with this. (I have written the best ones down for you.)

Reading books and reading at home

We ask that you read to your child as often as possible and that you listen to them read at least two pages from their reading book every day and sign their reading diary. There will be rewards at the end of each half term for the child (and parent) who reads the most consistently. It is really important to ask your child questions after they have read to you. Please also remind them about the punctuation and expression while they are reading.

PE Kits

PE will be taught every Monday and it is really important that your child has a full school PE kit, (shorts, T-shirt and pumps). The kit should be left in school until the last day of half term, when it should be taken home for washing. Please make sure your child does not wear jewellery on their PE day – earrings that cannot be removed will be covered by tape.

Your child is an important member of Cedar Class and we hope they look forward to our new school year and class. They will be taught a range of strategies for learning and will be encouraged to become an independent learner who can problem solve and organise their thoughts and feelings maturely.

Please contact the office if you have any worries or concerns that you wish to discuss with me in confidence. We are available from Monday to Friday (term time), between 8.15-8.45 or after 3.20pm.

We look forward to teaching your child,

Mrs J Jones and Mr E Maynard
